Vicolo di Santa
Maria in Cappella
From Spring 2008
LMI will be hosting students in a residence at Vicolo di Santa Maria in
Cappella. Santa Maria in Cappella is located in Trastevere between
Lungotevere a Ripa and Viale Trastevere. Located at Vicolo Santa Maria
in Cappella and Via Pietro Peretti, the complex is found in an
untouristed Roman neighborhood that takes you away from the busy
historic center without going far at all. Just outside the complex are
tabacconists, small restaurants, and wine and coffee bars, perfect for
making a quick trip out and giving a neighborhood feel to the area.
The complex consists of three principal buildings (and
three minor buildings): one is the home of a hospice, the second a
senior citizen home and the third (on the North end of the complex) a
former convent and hospice the new LMI facility. The complex itself
belongs to one of the most famous families in Rome, the Doria-Pamphilj.
Santa Maria in Cappella is a three floor residence complete with
kitchens, multiple bathrooms, multiple bedrooms, and common areas on
each floor. The entrance and exit to the building is located on the
Lungotevere.
The Doria-Pamphilj complex surrounds one of the largest
enclosed gardens in Rome, perfect for sketching on a sunny day. The
garden offers students and faculty alike a tranquil, open space just by
stepping outside the building. Another particularity of the complex is
Rome’s smallest church, built in 1060, San Francesca Romana. The church
is adjacent the LMI residence. Literally in the middle of excavation and
restoration, the church can offer art and architecture students the
opportunity to get involved with the city of Rome and have hands on
experience with the tiny church.
Student housing facilities are available on the 1, 2, and 3rd floors of
the building directly behind the church:
1st Floor- 4 bedrooms can house up to 11 students

2nd Floor- 6 bedrooms can house up to 12 students
3rd Floor- 8 bedrooms, up to 10-11 students/faculty
First floor bedrooms are tucked away in the building to guard against
excessive noise and provide the possibility of housing an entire
program: studio space and student housing on the same floor. The third
and fourth floor bedrooms offer breathtaking views of the Tiber River
and Aventine Hill (noise from outside is kept to a minimum with
double-paned windows). Rooms that face
the interior of the complex look onto a large garden complete with
persimmon and lemon trees.

the three floors below to see photos of each, as well as the garden and
views from some of the rooms.
